2025.11.22 Interview Records: Private Recycling Centers in Taoyuan City

Recycling Station Introduction

Located on 217 Yanping Road in Taoyuan, this recycling station has an unremarkable appearance. Under its corrugated metal roof, several fabric banners faded by the sun hang, while neatly sorted cardboard boxes and plastic crates are stacked inside.

There is no eye-catching sign at the entrance, making it seem like just another ordinary part of the street corner. Before visiting the recycling station in person, we first reviewed residents’ comments on Google Maps. We found that many people come here to sell recyclables for income, though some expressed dissatisfaction with the relatively low recycling prices. Through further interviews, we learned that prices were not always this low in the past; rather, due to various policy measures and market pressures, the station had no choice but to lower its purchasing prices, gradually leading to these complaints.

However, once we truly stepped inside the station, what stood out was not merely the transactions but the constant flow of people and the familiar exchanges of greetings. Nearly everyone who came to exchange recyclables was able to chat naturally with the owner, as if they were long-time friends.

The Lesson from the Shop Owner

Life has become easier, and goods are cheap, which leads to excessive waste." During our interview on Nov 22, 2025, the owner lamented how functional items are discarded. She taught us the 3Rs: Recycle, Reuse, and especially Reduce. This humble attitude toward life is the most profound lesson these senior guardians have taught us.

The Resident's Choice

Records from Nov, 22 2025, document the residents' choice. Many residents choose to bring their collected resources to the "Taole Station" rather than simply handing them to collection trucks. Tapping EasyCards transforms materials into credits, achieving a soulful exchange between material and value.

A Business of Honesty

For vulnerable seniors ("Little Bees") without capital or pensions, recycling is a "business without startup costs," traded purely with physical strength and time. Requiring no investment, they earn their living independently through sheer diligence. In an era of scams, this integrity—where every cent is earned through honest labor—is the most precious lesson we students have learned.

The ultimate cycle is ensuring every bit of hard work nourishes the Earth.

Policy & Reality

The government's "Care Program" raised subsidies from NT$3 to NT$18 per kg (capped at $5,000) to protect the dignity of self-reliant labor. While federal policies have been adjusted amid controversies, cities like Taoyuan continue their efforts, ensuring support reaches individuals in need rather than being exploited.
